Recognising Risk
To many, ocean racing sounds like a risky venture. However, as with all serious sports, it must be recognised that the perceived danger is itself an essential factor in generating huge levels of interest from the general public. Without it, there would be little interest and no programme. There are of course real risks, but equally real are the steps taken to minimise and mitigate them though increased professionalism, better preparation and improved technology etc.
Much responsibility is taken by the race organizers to ensure the events are run successfully and safely. With the organisers in control of the overall exercise, and overseeing our programme, we ensure that risks are recognised, minimised and mitigated. ‘Hope for the best and plan for the worst’.
Processes will be implemented to evaluate and control risks, backed up by contingency and crisis management plans that take all aspects of the programme into account.
